Spirulina powder is an organism commonly referred to as the “blue-green algae” plant, that is natively grown in lakes, ponds, or cultivated in tanks.
As a rich source of essential fatty acids, minerals, vitamins, and various oxidants, spirulina powder is added directly to foods or is encapsulated as a dietary supplement. It is an excellent addition to a vegan or vegetarian diet because it provides an abundance of essential protein.
Spirulina has a fish-like flavor sometimes described as an “acquired taste.” For this reason, it is most often packed in capsules.
It is one of the few plant sources of vitamin B12, a single teaspoon of spirulina contains more B12 than in the liver.
Spirulina is also a rich source of amino acids, antioxidants, protein, calcium, and iron.
